From Classroom to Power Grid: REG Inspires Primary Students in Energy Careers

On Monday, April 27, 2026, the CEO of Rwanda Energy Group (REG), Armand Zingiro, hosted six primary school students in Primary 5 from Green Hills Academy, accompanied by two parents, during an educational visit aimed at deepening their understanding of electricity and inspiring future careers in electrical engineering.

The visit was part of the students’ academic exploration, designed to help them better understand how electricity is generated, transmitted, and distributed across Rwanda. It also reflected their growing interest in science and technology, particularly in the field of electrical engineering.

As part of the experience, the students toured the Mont Kigali Substation in Nyarugenge District, where they observed firsthand how electricity generated from various power plants is received, managed, and distributed across the City of Kigali and beyond. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world applications in the energy sector.

Speaking on the significance of the visit, one of the accompanying parents, Eduije Musabe, emphasized its relevance within the school’s academic framework:“At Green Hills Academy, students follow the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, which encourages research and problem-solving. These students are working on a project aimed at understanding and addressing challenges related to electricity access in communities. This visit has provided them with valuable insights into how electricity is produced, distributed, and the challenges involved.”

The students expressed enthusiasm about the knowledge they gained and reaffirmed their ambition to pursue science-related studies in secondary school and university, with the goal of becoming professionals in electrical engineering.

In his remarks, REG CEO Armand Zingiro commended the students for their curiosity and early interest in the energy sector. He noted that Rwanda continues to require skilled professionals in electrical engineering to support the expansion of electricity access and drive innovation within the sector.

He encouraged the students to remain focused on their studies and to strive toward becoming future innovators and experts who will contribute meaningfully to the country’s development.

The visit underscores REG’s ongoing commitment to inspiring young learners to pursue careers in science and technology. Through such engagements, students gain practical exposure that helps shape their career aspirations while equipping them with knowledge relevant to national development.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) programme, offered at Green Hills Academy, plays a key role in nurturing critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, and global awareness, preparing students for higher education and future professional success.
