To prevent fire outbreaks caused by improper use of gas, the Rwanda Energy Group (REG) reminds you to take the following precautions:
The gas cylinder must be intact
Check that the pipe and gas cooker appliances are not damaged
A gas cylinder should place vertically and in a ventilated area.
The pipe from the cylinder to the cooker must be insulated from heat damage
Replace your pipe if it appears to be worn of damaged
It is not advisable to keep a gas cylinder next to the cooker
Avoid using a charcoal stove or any other heat source in the room where the gas cooker is lit.
Avoid carrying gas on bicycle, motorcycle or car in horizontal position, The cylinder must be kept in vertical position
It is prohibited to clean gas appliances (cooker, pipe, regulator, cylinder etc ) with alcohol, gasoline, or other flammable materials.
It is good idea to use a gas leak detector, which is a device that detects gas leakage in the cooking room
Ideally, a gas cylinder should be installed outside the cooking room , but in ventilated area, and covered, where the cylinder can’t slide.
If you smell a gas leak in your cooking room do the following:
Avoid doing any electrical work such as turning lights on or off, switching off electrical appliances such as irons etc.
Close the gas cylinder and gas cooker
Open the windows and doors to let outside air into the cooking room
Disconnect the gas cylinder and take it outside away from flammable materials
Look for the source of the gas leakage (either a cylinder, a regulator, a pipe or gas burner)
