Construction of Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant to be completed by the end of 2027

The Rwanda Energy Group (REG) indicates that, barring any changes, the goal of completing the Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant by the end of 2027 will be achieved.
During a visit to the construction site of the Nyabarongo II Hydropower Plant located between Gakenke and Kamonyi districts, REG CEO Eng. Maximilien Byilingiro was briefed on the progress of the construction work.
Mr. Maximilien commended the progress made, he urged the Chinese construction company (Power China-SINOHYDRO) and the technical team from REG-EDCL overseeing the project to intensify their efforts and accelerate construction to ensure the plant is completed within the set deadline.
Currently, construction has reached 73.1% completion, with the project expected to be finished no later than December 2027. The plant will generate 43.5 MW of electricity and supply over 445 million cubic meters of water per day. It will also feature a dam or large water reservoir serving various purposes, such as crop irrigation and flood prevention for areas downstream of the power plant.
Theoneste Higaniro, the Director in charge of Power Generation and Distribution Projects at REG-EDCL, confirms that, barring any unforeseen changes, the target of completing the power plant next year will be met.
He stated: "We want to assure the public that this goal is achievable, as we still have a year and a half remaining and the project is actually progressing well. Although the conflict between the US and Iran caused transportation issues regarding the shipment of equipment from China and elsewhere, we are doing everything possible to ensure the materials arrive; once they do and the preparatory work is finished, we will immediately proceed with installation to ensure we complete the project within our set timeframe."
Liu Qiankun, the head of the Chinese company constructing the plant (Power China-SINOHYDRO), also confirms that they are making every effort—working around the clock, seven days a week—to ensure the construction work is completed. He said: "We are doing everything possible to complete this project, and we are confident that we will undoubtedly achieve the goal we have set for ourselves."
REG also states that this power plant will contribute to providing reliable, uninterrupted, and affordable electricity to its customers, industries, and investors.
