4188 families living in Ngororero District are celebrating the change in their livelihoods thanks to electricity

Citizens living in Bwira, Nyange and Ndaro sectors of Ngororero District are jubilating as they got access to electricity within one year. This electricity has enabled these citizens to start new businesses and get out of darkness.

The Manager of REG branch in Ngororero District, Mudasingwa Alexis, said that Ndaro and Bwira sectors had zero access to electricity till last year when they started being connected.

“Cell offices, health centers, schools, business centers and other productive users were connected to the grid. Now we have here barber shops, milling machines, and other new businesses using electricity” he said.

Bucyanshaka François Xavier living in Bwira sector, says that electricity has helped them to get out of darkness as they no longer use traditional lamps known as “Akatadowa” which had a lot of smoke and could cause respiratory diseases.

“Hair cuts were done using mechanical hair clippers that we call “nyonganyonga” but now we are using electric ones. This is the same with milling machines because we were using fuel powered machines and now we are using electric ones” he said.

The Headmaster of Bungwe School located in Bwira Sector said that electricity has facilitated the school to use some appliances such as printers, computers and photocopy machines. He said that before getting electricity, they had to send their clerk to Ngororero Center to get their documents printed and copied at the cost of 20 frws per page plus a transport fee of 6,000 Frws.

Today, the number of households which have electricity has increased today up to 31% from 10.6% in 2017.

There is another ongoing project in Ngororero District which will electrify 4814 households by 2019 in a bid to reach the country’s target of 100% access to electricity by 2024.
