Overview
Generation
Currently, the installed capacity increased by 53 MW, from 353.402MW in FY 2022/2023 to 406.402MW in 2023/2024. This includes 56MW from the commissioning of Shema plant and 27 MW from the Rusumo plant. Additionally, 30MW was decommissioned from SOEnergy by January 2024.
Transmission
As of end of June 2023, the total length of the transmission network, including 220kV and 110kV lines, was recorded at 1158 km across the country.
Distribution
As of today, a total of 28,985.8 kilometers of distribution lines have been constructed across the country, in a bid to extend electricity producers to the end user. Of these, 10,520.1 km are Medium Voltage lines while 18,465.7km are low voltage distribution lines.
Electricity Access
As of end July 2025, the cumulative connectivity rate in Rwanda is 84.6% of Rwandan households including 59.6% connected to the national grid and 25.0% accessing through off-grid systems (mainly solar).
Biomass & Clean Cooking
The National Energy Policy and National Energy Strategy, recognizes that the use of biomass energy has potentially serious environmental implications and may be non-renewable unless properly managed. Biomass energy will remain dominant for cooking, other household uses and small-scale industries. In this regard it is imperative that forests and woodlots b…
Petroleum
Currently, Rwanda imports all its petroleum products requirements from abroad since there is no local production.
