A one day workshop on the status of geothermal development in Rwanda

Kigali,10th December,2014 -The Ministry of Infrastructure (MININFRA) in collaboration with the European Union Energy Initiative (EUEI) organized a one day workshop to discuss and brain storm on the status of geothermal resource development in Rwanda. The workshop was officially opened by the Permanent Secretary of MININFRA Mr. Christian RWAKUNDA. The workshop brought together all stakeholders and development partners in geothermal sector.

In this workshop the EUEI will share the way on the findings provided by FICHTNER, a Germany consultancy firm that carried out a study on the on geothermal development in Rwanda. This will however discuss a series of the relevant Scenarios and the workshop inputs will enrich the final document to further indicate the geothermal sector status in Rwanda.

The presenters discussed also the base power load for the domestic use on Rwanda’s grid, partnership dialogues with focus on development strategy for
private sector participation, regulatory environment and the role of geothermal resources towards increasing energy portfolio in Rwanda.
Currently, the geothermal prospects under intensive study include wells in; KARISIMBI, KINIGI, GISENYI IRIBA, KARAGO and BUGARAMA. The studies are still ongoing, and will come up with clear road map of how the sector would be operational towards energy generation in Rwanda.
