2300 households to be connected on the grid before the end of February

On Thursday 07th February 2018, Rwanda Energy Group connected on the grid more than 200 households in Tangata Village, Rwerere Sector in Burera District.

The Mayor of BUrera District, Florence Uwambajemariya, who were present during the connection of these households, requested the beneficiary households to start using this electricity productively.

She said that the ongoing electrification projects in Burera Districts will provide access to electricity to a lot of households before the end of February 2018.

 “This program was initiated by H.E the President of the Republic. He wants that citizens of Rwanda gets access to electricity. Those who are not yet connected will be connected soon.” Said the Mayor. 

In Burera District, through a contract signed between REG and the District, a total of 2100 additional  households  will be connected before the end of this month.

The manager of REG branch in Burera District, Celestin Muhayimana, said that 3 out of 11 sites to be electrified are already connected and that the rest is being connected very soon.

“For now, we have so far connected the university of Butaro and Burera Handcraft center. Today we’ve connected Tangata Center” he said. 

The remaining sites to be connected include Nyagahinga, Mubaya, Kabanga, Nyanama, Gitanga, Rugezi and Ruhunde Sector”.

 “We had challenges which were due to the lack of access to electricity. For exemple, we had to travel to 7 kilometers to be able to charge our phones. Thieves also used the opportunity of the lack of light to steal our properties during the night. Also our children used “katadowa” to study during the night. I thank the President of the Republic for developing our infrastructure” said Mrs. Kaneza Jeannette, one of citizens who got electricity in Tangata. 

Currently, access to electricity is estimated at 42% in Rwanda. REG has a target to electrify the all households before the end of the year 2024
